Though he has passed, we’re glad he came
Someone asks you to list off your favorite rappers of all time, he’s probably in your top 3.
Someone asks you to list off your favorite lyricists of all time, he’s probably in there too.
Someone asks you to list off your favorite songs, at least two of his are on that list.
Today we celebrate his birthday.
More than half the rappers wouldn’t be doing what they’re doing if it weren’t for him (whether they’re doing him justice…that’s arguable). Many consider him the Michael Jackson of the rap world. I consider him one of the realist rappers to have ever gripped a mic.
Never claiming or acting to be something he wasn’t, 2Pac has been an inspiration of mine for as long as I can remember. This was a man who heavily influenced (and still continues to) not just an urban culture, but a musical nation. A man who remains alive today through his planted seeds of lyrical insight and truth. A man who I place amongst the influential giants (Malcom X, MLK, Obama…) who’s messages included bringing about change.
Along with so many others, I will never stop being inspired by him. Most importantly, I will remember that every time I claim him as an inspiration, I will have to do whatever it is he inspired me to do with one hundred percent realness and passion.
Overstand that,
M
